Gregory of Nazianzus and Basil of Caesarea were celebrated leaders in the fourth-century church and also close friends. They first met as philosophy students, and Gregory later said that they became like “two bodies with a single spirit.”
With their career paths so similar, rivalry could’ve arisen between Gregory and Basil. But Gregory explained that they avoided this temptation by making a life of faith, hope, and good deeds their “single ambition,” then “spurring each other on” to make the other more successful in this goal than themselves individually. As a result, both grew in faith and rose to high levels of leadership without rivalry.
The book of Hebrews is written to help us stay strong in faith (HEBREWS 2:1), encouraging us to focus on “the hope we profess” and to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (10:23–24). While this command is given in the context of a congregation (V. 25), by applying it to their friendship, Gregory and Basil showed how friends can encourage each other to grow and avoid any “bitter root,” such as rivalry that might grow between them (12:15).
What if we made faith, hope, and good deeds the ambition of our own friendships, then encouraged our friends to become more successful in this goal than ourselves individually? The Holy Spirit is ready to help us do both. SHERIDAN VOYSEY | | [ 히브리서 10:19 - 10:25 ] - 찬송가 424 장 서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며

나지안주스의 그레고리와 카이사레이아의 바실은 4세기 교회의 저명한 지도자였으며 친한 친구사이이기도 했습니다. 그들은 철학을 공부하는 학생으로 처음 만났는데, 그레고리는 후에 자신들이 마치 “하나의 영혼을 가진 두 몸” 같았다고 말했습니다.
하는 일이 매우 비슷했기에 그레고리와 바실 사이에는 경쟁심이 생길 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 그런 유혹을 피할 수 있었던 것은 그들이 믿음, 소망, 선행의 삶을 사는 것을 “유일한 야망”으로 삼았고, 자기 자신보다는 상대방이 이 목표를 더 잘 달성하도록 “서로를 격려했기” 때문이라고 그레고리는 설명합니다. 결과적으로 두 사람 모두가 믿음 안에서 성장했고 경쟁을 하지 않고도 고위 지도자의 자리에 이를 수 있었습니다.
히브리서는 우리가 믿음 안에서 늘 강건하게 살게 하려고 기록된 책입니다 (히브리서 2:1). “우리가 믿는 도리의 소망”에 집중하고 “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려”할 것을 권합니다(10:23-24). 히브리서의 이러한 말씀은 한 교회의 성도들에게 주어진 말씀이지만(25절), 그레고리와 바실은 이것을 자신들의 친구 관계에 적용시켜 어떻게 서로의 성장을 도우면서 친구 사이에 생길 수 있는 경쟁심 같은 “쓴 뿌리”를 피할 수 있는지를 보여줍니다(12:15).
우리도 믿음, 소망, 선행을 우리들 친구 사이의 유일한 야망으로 삼고, 나 자신보다는 친구들이 이 목표를 더 잘 이루도록 도와준다면 어떨까요? 성령님은 우리가 이 두 가지를 모두 이룰 수 있도록 언제든 도와주실 것입니다. |

Jesus, please make my friendships rich in faith, hope, and good deeds.
19. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
20. by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,
21. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
22. let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
23. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
24. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
25. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another -- and all the more as you see the Day approaching. |

24. 서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며
25. 모이기를 폐하는 어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 하지 말고 오직 권하여 그 날이 가까움을 볼수록 더욱 그리하자 |
